What are Mycorrhizae?

Mycorrhizae are beneficial fungi that establish a mutualistic relationship with plant roots. These fungi colonize the root system, extending their hyphae into the surrounding soil to enhance nutrient and water uptake. There are two primary types of mycorrhizal associations: endomycorrhizae (arbuscular mycorrhizae) and ectomycorrhizae. Arbuscular mycorrhizae (AMF), such as Rhizophagus intraradices, penetrate plant root cells and are the most common type, benefiting a wide range of plant species. Ectomycorrhizae, on the other hand, form a sheath around the roots and are typically associated with trees like pines and oaks.

Benefits of Mycorrhizae

  • Enhanced Nutrient Absorption – Mycorrhizae significantly increase the surface area of roots, facilitating efficient uptake of phosphorus, nitrogen, potassium, and essential micronutrients that might otherwise be inaccessible to plants.

  • Improved Water Retention – By forming a dense fungal network, mycorrhizae help plants access moisture more efficiently, reducing drought stress and improving hydration under dry conditions.

  • Disease Resistance – Mycorrhizal fungi create a protective barrier around roots, preventing infection from soil-borne pathogens while triggering plant defense mechanisms to enhance natural immunity.

  • Faster Root Establishment – By accelerating root branching and elongation, mycorrhizae promote vigorous root development, making them ideal for newly planted cuttings, transplants, and seedlings.

  • Sustainable Growth – Mycorrhizal associations reduce dependency on synthetic fertilizers by improving soil biodiversity, cycling nutrients naturally, and enhancing long-term soil fertility.
